today i graduate!

also, updated info for the EB White Xmas Party. we dropped the door price back down to $5 and $10. our outdoor chill room was forecast to be a bit too chilly, so we brought it inside and combined it with our main room. we'll have heaters too to keep us all from freezing in this weather!

--
IT'S COLD!!!!
We noticed. And since mother nature is actually trying to give us a White Christmas here in the bay, we've decided to get back to the one "One room, One vibe" feel of past White XMas shows, & bring our dj's in from the cold. We will also be heating both the inside & outside areas, so you know where to come this Saturday to defrost your toes.

E.B.'s 3rd Annual Xmas party & gift exchange:
White X-Mas
Saturday, December 20th
Underground Location (signup required at www.evilbreaks.com)

$5 with a gift to exchange
$10 without a gift
10pm-7am

Like the last couple "White X-Mas" parties, you'll get in on the cheap if you bring a wrapped gift valued between $5 & $10 for our little gift exchange. We've had terrific fun with this, and I'd have to say that this event has got to be one of the most interactive events of all time. & to really top off this years show, Bam is also going to be celebrating his graduation from "Expression" which is the night before. So if you see him, give him a congrats & a shot....haha.

As always with this party, we will be limiting attendance to keep it smaller, more personal, and comfortable for everyone attending, so please visit our site & sign up so you can get info for the show. Yes, even if you're already on the E.B. mailing list.

Oh yeah, wear white.

DJ's for the night:

Mr. Projectile LIVE (Nexus/Semisexual)
Aaron Jae vs. Tamo (E.B./Space Cowboys & Angels of Bass)
Bam vs. Mozaic (E.B./Invibe & Nexus/Raindance)
M.O.D.
Ham infused gin?

for some reason, the thought of this turns my stomach.

--
A meal in your cocktail glass

Gary Regan

Friday, November 14, 2008
Canary Flip cocktail photographed Thursday, October 30, 2...

I spent my birthday in Sydney, Australia, this year, courtesy of David Spanton, publisher of Australian Bartender magazine. Spanton generously flew me down there on the promise that I'd host a couple of cocktail presentations during his two-day trade show, and help judge the finals in his magazine's Bartender of the Year competition. It sounded like a good deal to me, and it turned out to be a pretty glorious event.

The cocktails I sampled during the competition were nothing short of world class, though some were pretty weird. Have you ever heard of the Ham, Cheese and Tomato Toasted Sandwich Martini, for instance?

The man who came up with this concoction, a certain Owen Michael Collin, tends bar at Farina Kitchen and Bar in Adelaide, South Australia, and he was kind enough to fill me in on how he accomplished this culinary masterpiece. It's a pretty fascinating piece of methodology.

First you take a ham hock and infuse it into a bottle of Corenwyn, a Dutch style of gin that's heavy on the malt and tastes something like a cross between bourbon and gin - if you can get your mind around that. After the ham soaks for about an hour it's time to remove it from the gin, and pop the gin into the fridge. Why? So that any fat that dissolved in the gin will solidify so you can strain it out. You wouldn't want a fatty cocktail, now, would you?

Eben Freeman, molecular mixologist at New York's Tailor, is said to have been the guy who first used this methodology, and it was he who coined the term "fat washing" to describe the procedure, so don't go thinking that infusing gin with ham is something that only bartenders in the Southern hemisphere would think of - it's more of a Yankee thing, really.

According to Owen's instructions, you now have to "warm a large chunk of Parmesan, including the rind, in some water with a goodly amount of salt," then continue to infuse the water with the cheese until "the desired flavor is gained" before adding a little lecithin - a fatty substance found in egg yolks - to the cheese-flavored salty mixture. And finally you whip up the salty, cheesy, lecithin-y water with a hand blender to produce a Parmesan foam.

Now it's time to assemble the drink, and this is done by muddling a tomato in a mixing glass, adding the ham-flavored gin, shaking the mixture over ice, straining it into a Champagne coupe and topping the drink with the Parmesan foam. Before sipping this cocktail, though, it's imperative to take a bite of buttered toast, in order to complete the experience. The result, believe it or believe it not, is sheer heaven in a glass. It tastes exactly like a ham, cheese and tomato toasted sandwich. And a good one, at that.

Another drink that caught my attention at the Sydney bar show was the Canary Flip, a cocktail created by Nicholas Edwards, bartender at a joint called the Lark, in Brisbane. There's no ham, cheese or tomato in the Canary Flip, but there's an egg in there, so I guess it's what my new Aussie friends would call a breakfast drink. Life in the cocktail world is never dull.
Canary Flip

Makes 1 drink

Adapted from a recipe by Nicholas Edwards, the Lark, Brisbane, Australia.

* 1 ounce yellow Chartreuse
* 1 ounce Courvoisier V.S. Cognac
* 1/2 ounce simple syrup
* 3 dashes Fernet Branca
* 1 egg
* 1 lemon twist, as garnish
* 1 pistachio biscotti

Instructions: Fill a cocktail shaker with yellow Chartreuse, Cognac, simple syrup, Fernet Branca and egg. Shake without ice for 10 seconds to emulsify the egg. Add ice, shake and strain into a chilled sherry glass. Add the lemon twist garnish, and serve the biscotti on the side.

Early Friday night, I'm playing at the party formerly known as the Rotten Tomatoes Halloween Party. It's a mainstream crowd whom normally requests hip hop when I'm playing breaks and 80s. This year I think I'm going to say fuck it and play all mashups. There are some really funny (and surprisingly dancefloor friendly) mashups out there. I think i have enough for a set.

Then the main event on Friday...Evil Breaks is hosting the back room at Night of the Living Bass.

If I'm still on my feet...i hope to make it to the Brass Tax 666 party.

Then, Saturday night, Aaron and I are tagging at Ghostship.

in search of housing

dear friends,

i will be in need of a new housing situation come end of November. as some of you may know, my awesome housemates are going on an extended adventure in Singapore and thus, we will all be moving out of our sweet, Emeryville abode.

this also coincides with my finishing school at the beginning of December, which puts me in a state of flux. i'm currently on the job hunt (had an interview earlier this week!), but i'm not sure where that might take me. hence, my preference is to not lock myself into a long term commitment as far as housing goes...because i just don't know where exactly i'm going to end up job-wise (SF, East Bay or beyond).

what I'm looking for:

- 2-3 month sublet or temporary housing situation beginning December 1st (or slightly earlier)
- SF or east bay (BART/public transit accessible)
- $800/month rent max

if anyone knows of or hears of a potentially suitable situation, please contact me or forward my contact info on!

thank you, all.

The email that has haunted me for 10 years

Way back in 1998, I was working my first job at the Asian American Journalists Association. That year was the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

One day, our office was notified that the MSNBC website reported the women's figure skating results with this headline:

"American beats out Kwan"

This was in reference to Tara Lipinski beating Michelle Kwan. Obviously, this was a somewhat misleading and offensive headline since both were Americans. The not-so-subtle implication was that Kwan was not American, which played on age old stereotypes that Americans of Asian decent aren't really American.

Being young and brash (and recently graduated from college where I was active in various campus organizations), I sent out an email to a handful of friends bringing attention to the headline and making a few jokes. This email came back to haunt me as it got forwarded back and forth across the country several times over. I got emails from friends i hadn't talked to in years saying "dude, i got your email!"

The email was forwarded around so much that Asian Week picked it up and printed it as a letter to the editor without my consent.

It also almost got me fired because I had sent the email from my work email account, so it was taken by some to be a response by the Asian American Journalists Association.

The email continued to float around cyberspace for many years.

Yesterday, i find out that i'm quoted in a frickin' book!

I'm quoted in this book:

Who knows, perhaps this book will be read by generations of young students in their Asian American studies courses.

I'm not really sure what to think of this. I was pretty pissed when Asian Week printed my email without my consent. I had even called the managing editor to complain, but they refused to write and addendum.

It's also odd to see my email quoted in a book when the email caused me so much grief at the time.

Here's a copy of the original email I wrote 10 years ago!

Reporting on the Olympic figure skating competition, MSNBC
(Microsoft's internet news venture) used the following headline after Tara Lipinski took the gold:

"American beats out Kwan"

Kwan, which all of you and most of the world should know, is an American skater. As such, this headline could be interpretted in a variety of ways: racist, stupid, ignorant, offensive, etc.

The Asian American Journalists Association is writing a formal statement in regards to MSNBC's use of the headline. In phone conversations, MSNBC and it's online newsroom have responded by saying that the reporter who wrote the article did not have it approved by the editor before posting it to the internet. They have also indicated there was no malicious (AKA: racist) intent.

Here would be my suggested alternatives for headlines:
"Lipinski beats out Kwan"
"Polack beats out Chink"
"Whitey beats out Slant"
"U.S. beats out Red China"
"The Great White Race beats out The Inscrupulous Yellow Peril"
(Please take those last 4 as jokes)

Whether or not there were racial undertones to the headline (i.e. White=American and Asian=foreigner), this was irresponsible journalism and should not be tolerated.

If you would like to respond to MSNBC, you may e-mail them at the following address:

sports@msnbc.com

Thanks,
Brandon Sugiyama
Executive Leadership Program Coordinator
Asian American Journalists Association
brandons@aaja.org

EDIT:
Today has been filled with exciting news!

Our school routinely submits student work to various competitions. This is how my submission to the Webby-in-Motion got to be selected earlier this year.

It turns out that 11 student submissions from our school were selected as finalists in the Motion Awards, part of the Motion 08 Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico next month. Of the 11 submissions, 4 are solo projects of mine and 1 is a group project I worked on!

To top things off, our school is going to pay for all student finalists to fly to and attend the conference where the winners of the awards will be announced.

I'm ecstatic!

It's an honor to be in the running for a Motion Award and the conference looks to be amazing. Among the speakers are Chris and Trish Meyer who wrote the textbook our school uses for our After Effects classes.

ALSO, Jamie Caliri is speaking! He's the mastermind behind the United Airlines "Heart" and "Dragon" commercials and the title sequence for "Lemony Snicket."

I have a lot of work to do to prepare for the conference. The roof leaked. One downstairs bedroom was landlocked in a back interior corner, leaving no possible escape hatch if a fire broke out. And she inherited a big stack of what must have been two decades' worth of tenant complaints. "It was an absentee landlord from Hong Kong who obviously bought the place as an investment," she said, adding that the old warehouse — which had indeed served as a noodle factory during the 1940s — had become "a serious slum hole."
